What areas do you specialize in, and what can I expect in treatment? We specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, attention deficit disorder, dependency, family conflict, grief/loss, impulse control, low self esteem, OCD, PTSD and most other behavioral health issues. 

What is your approach to adult therapy and how will I know if there is progress? We use evidence based practices to help people identify and make changes in their lives by using cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, systems based and integrative therapies. We also integrate interpersonal, psychological, medical and collaborative resources to treat the whole person.

What is the difference between counseling/therapy and talking to a friend? Psychotherapy offers you the opportunity to talk about issues that you may not want to share with a friend, in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

What are the benefits of counseling or therapy? The benefits of psychotherapy can include reduced anxiety, improved mood, improved motivation and more satisfying interpersonal relationships with others. Overall, improved life satisfaction. 

How should I prepare for my first counseling/therapy session? Be fearless! Complete your required paperwork, prior to your first session, so that both you and your therapist will have more time to talk during the first session.  Share your feelings, thoughts and your goals with your therapist.  

What can I expect during my first counseling/therapy session? Feel free!  Challenge yourself to have an open discussion and explore options to make your treatment work to improve your life.   Your psychotherapist is a real person and is ready to assist you to address issues that you identify and to achieve your goals.  You can discuss any topic or issues you want.

How frequently will we meet? Initially, you will meet with your psychotherapist at least once a week and over the course of treatment you will be able to reduce your meetings as you feel better.

Will I also need medication while going to counseling or therapy (let’s tie this back to medication management) You may require medication management during your course of treatment. Medication management is a great adjunct to psychotherapy. While many people are hesitant about medication, studies have consistently shown that medication and psychotherapy are the most effective approach to dealing with many mood or behavioral issues. Our prescribers are skilled in assisting you to make the right choice in any medication management plan. You will never be forced to take medication during your course of treatment, it is available as part of your comprehensive mental health plan if needed.
